Tawakalt is currently a lecturer at the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, University of Lagos.

She has been a co-facilitator/trainer of “DNA BASICS” and “MOLECULAR WORKSHOPS” at the Department of Cell Biology & Genetics, University of Lagos alongside Dr. Voke Toye.

Dr. Tawakalt research interests focus on individuals with autism spectrum disorders in Lagos Metropolis with the aim of highlighting the most common phenotypes in autistic children; screening for micro-duplications of 15q11-13 and 7q11.23 if families of autistic children; assaying for amino acid and neurotransmitters (GABA and glutamate) levels in autistic children against age-matched controls.

She is committed to research support and mentorship and the use of genetic approach to proffer better diagnostics, treatment and management for most diseases and disorders especially in Africa. She believes in the potentials of utilizing molecular genetics for better healthcare delivery in our nation.

Tawakalt received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Cell Biology & Genetics and her Doctoral degree in Cell & Molecular Biology from the University of Lagos. She is the recipient of several local and international awards and has had numerous trainings in molecular genetics, molecular biology computational neuroscience, neurogenetics and forensic biology. She has also attended both local and international conferences.
